During the middle of the night, Sarah and Cameron are in the house of Boyd Sherman, a child psychologist. Sherman's name was found on the blood list written by the resistance soldier.

Sherman hears noises, wakes up and investigates. He finds no one in his home but a sees an open window.

The next day, Catherine Weaver is on a photo shoot for a magazine. The photographer instructs her to pose and she robotically follows. An assistant asks her daughter, Savannah, to join her mother, but she refuses. Weaver sits down and asks her to sit too. Instead Savannah runs out of the room leaving behind a puddle of pee.

After they clean up and the photo shoot is over, Weaver asks the assistant what she would do with Savannah. She recommends a therapist.

Meanwhile, Sarah, John and Cameron go to Sherman's office posing as a family in need of therapy. Sarah asks for Sherman's qualifications. Sherman says that he was a therapist for the military before his current caseload of treating mostly civilians.

While talking, Cameron places a bug behind a lamp. After their initial interview, Sherman asks to meet them individually the next day.

Later after receiving a recommendation from her assistant, Weaver brings her daughter to meet with Sherman. Sherman gives her toys to play with including a set of cards containing different emotions. Sherman takes Weaver outside of the office and tells her that the therapy may take a few sessions. He comes back and sees that Savannah has picked out a card representing 'scared.' After spending some time with Savannah, she opens up to Sherman telling him that she wants her old mommy back.

At the Connor home, Derrick returns from a run. He tells Sarah and Cameron that he checked out Sherman's place and could not find anything unusual. They hear a gunshot inside the house and run to John's room. They find John with a gun and he says that he had an accident while cleaning it.

The next day John goes to Sherman's office for his appointment. Cameron is waiting outside listening to what is going on in the office.

Before meeting with John, Sherman is scheduled to meet with Weaver. He brings her to his office and tells her that because Savannah's father has died, she needs Weaver to reassure her daughter.

During this meeting, John sees Savannah trying to tie her shoes. He kneels down and shows her the 'Squirrel and Tree' technique. Weaver is done with her appointment, walks quickly past the waiting room and calls for her daughter to follow.

Elsewhere, Derrick is at a park and sees a woman who he thinks he recognizes. He chases after her, and she begins to run faster. Derrick catches up to her at a hotel room, grabs her and turns her around. He knows her from the future. She is Jesse, one of his resistance comrades.

They enter her room and she begins to get out of her running clothes. Derrick notices a burn mark on her side that was not there when he jumped back in time. Jesse explains that she wanted to get away from the war and met a time 'bubble tech' who sent her back.

Back at the office, John sits down to talk to Sherman. Sherman notices that John's behavior is similar to vets that he has treated. He sees a burn mark on John's face that he received after his gun accidentally went off. Sherman asks about it and John says that he got it while cooking pasta. Sherman asks John if he feels that he needs to escape and he responds by saying that he thinks about it all of the time.

Sherman reassures John that what they talk about is confidential. John remembers that the office is being monitored and tells Sherman that it is not safe to talk.

Sarah arrives to pick up John and sees Cameron in the waiting room. Cameron has just read a brochure and tells Sarah that 60 percent of teen suicides are committed using a gun.

In Sherman's office, he tells Sarah that John reminds him of a vet. He asks her if he has been through any violent experiences. She says that he has not and adds that he has never been abused. Sherman tells Sarah that John needs someone to talk to.

Back at the Zeiracorp lab, the company scientists are working on The Turk supercomputer. They find that the computer is slowing down in its processing time of information. The team notices that the computer is now repeating a series of images. Weaver is shown the images that the computer displays which includes a question mark, a math equation, a book, then an image of people crying.

Weaver returns to her office and finds Savannah watching a video of her father and mother while she was pregnant. Weaver notices her human version caressing the husband's hand and begins comforting her daughter.

On a nearby bus, a time bubble opens and a female Terminator enters the world. She sneaks up on the driver, kills him, takes his clothes, and leaves the bus.

Later, Sherman's assistant gets into her car and finds the Terminator in the back. The machine grabs and kills her.

Back at Zeiracorp, Weaver brings Sherman to her office and shows him the Artificial Intelligence project that she is working on. She shows him the series of images that the Turk is displaying. He examines them and begins to laugh. Weaver wonders what is so funny. Sherman explains that the images are a joke. He compares the behavior to a gifted child that has grown bored of the daily tasks that he or she has been given. He explains that the AI is attempting to show humor. He says that the question mark represents a question, the equations represents math, the book is a book, and the people crying represents sadness. Putting it together, the AI is saying 'Why are mathbooks so sad?' He says that the answer is, 'because it has so many problems.'
