FBI Agent McGowan calls in Sinclair and tells him that with his experience and service, he represents the future of the FBI. He asks him to talk about the relationship between Don and Charlie Eppes. Sinclair tells the administrator that they are each their own man.

After his interview, Sinclair and Don meet with Agent Granger at a coffee shop. Granger tells the two that 8 people were found shot inside, with 5 of them taken to the back room and executed. They find that no money or jewelery was taken from the scene, which leads the agents away from the motivation of robbery. One of the victims is a cop, Jerry Lowe, who was found with his holster unsnapped.

The team is introduced to John Smith from the LAPD who works in homicide and robbery. Don is taken outside and finds out that Charlie is working for the police department as their consultant.

Charlie tells the team that he will start analyzing the scene. He says that a person will sit most likely where they feel comfortable. He will categorize each person and determine the most likely place where they will be seated using an 'aggregation model.'

Don is then asked to meet with a Kurt Young, a movie producer. He goes to his studio and is greeted by the man. Kurt tells Don that Lowe was blackmailing him. He says that there was nothing illegal, but it is embarrassing.

Charlie is finished with his analysis and finds that one of the victims, Benito Alvarez, is located in a section of the diner where his model shows he should not be. The team finds that Alvarez had enough gunshot residue on his hand to shoot 7 people.

They dig deeper into Alvarez's past and find that he was a former LAPD that was kicked off the force due to drug use. He was also in the same graduating class as Lowe, the cop that was killed in the diner.

They find that right before he died, Lowe placed several phone calls to a Lynn Potter.

Sinclair and Granger go to Lynn Potter's house and find a short haired woman. Granger is instantly attracted to the lady. She sits them down and says that she assumes that they will be asking about Lowe.

She explains that she had an affair with Lowe a year ago. Lynn says that she did not kill 8 people and during the murders she was on her couch with her phone turned off.

Back at the federal building, Nikki tells Don that the bullets used in the murders were all 9mm bullets that were stamped 'Law Enforcement Only'.

They go to Detective Smith and he admits that Alvarez was working as a deep cover police officer. He adds that even though he was under cover, Alvarez still had a tight relationship with Lowe. Smith explains that Alvarez recently testified against a man named Derrick Frosten who went on the run. He says that the LAPD recently picked up his girlfriend, which probably means that he is nearby.

While leaving Smith's office, Don notices that Charlie is working in the building. He approaches and Charlie says that he misses working crime scenes and likes his new office. He says that he regrets that McGowan is now going after Don because of what he did.

Later, McGowan calls in Granger to ask about the Eppes. Granger tells him that the brother's 'out of the box' approach saved his life many times.

After his interview, Granger, Sinclair and Nikki receive a report locating Derrick and his crew. The LAPD and FBI hold a joint raid on his home. They flash the house, which causes Derrick and another suspect to flee. Granger chases a man, gets elbowed in his face, then takes him down. Sinclair jumps on a boat that Derrick has stolen to get away. Sinclair points his gun at him tells him to freeze. Derrick is then shot several times by a LAPD officer. Sinclair is angry because he had it under control, but the officer tells him that he saved his life and finds a gun on Derrick's body. He tells Sinclair that he should be happy that they caught the coffee shop killer.

Later at the FBI building, Sinclair has ordered to look in to the officer's file and finds that his name is Schmidt. Nikki becomes angry at Sinclair for looking into her former co-workers. Don sees her reaction and tell her that Sinclair has every right to investigate.
