The Second Coming and Butterfly Effect

Finally. Heroes is back. Now do we get to see if Nathan is dead? Who shot him? Did Niki become barbecue? We get some answers and more questions in the season's opening.

The episode starts four years in the future with Claire with a gun drawn on a cornered Peter. Peter looks rough with a scar running across his face. I smell a wound from Hiro sword... but I might be wrong. The slick haired Peter says that in this future people like him are being hunted. Claire states that she has made peace with this situation. Peter asks 'What happened to you Claire?' Claire responds by saying that she is special. Peter tries to persuade Claire saying that he can fix everything. Claire says that she always loved him and proceeds to pull the trigger.

After the gun is fired, Peter slows down time and avoids the bullet. He moves and takes Claire's gun. Peter then jumps to the present day, to the scene where Nathan is about to announce his powers at a press conference. Peter puts on a hat to disguise himself, draws Claire's gun and shoots his own brother, revealing who shot Nathan in last season's finale.

Future Peter escapes and hides his gun in a supply closet. Present day Peter and Detective Matt follow but lose him in the end.

We then cut to Claire at Costa Verde, California, where she watches the news that Nathan got shot twice in the chest. Claire then calls Peter who is with Nathan in the ambulance rushing to the hospital.

Nathan is brought into the emergency room with Peter watching. Peter waits for news of his brother's condition. Minutes pass then a doctor walks out to let him know the bad news. Nathan's body lies on the surgery table. Peter says goodbye, but Nathan miraculously awakes.

The scene shifts to the Yamagato Industries building with Hiro sitting in his late father's desk, concentrating on a clock. Hiro spends a few moments messing with time. Ando walks in and the two have a discussion of Hiro's position of owning 51 percent of his fathers company. Hiro says he has no interest in money and no need for jets for he can teleport.

There is a knock on the door and a bald headed Japanese man walks in to hand Hiro a package. The man, identified as Hiro's family lawyer, gives him a recorded DVD message recorded by his father before he died. Hiro tells Ando that the message contains details of his destiny.

Back at Claire's house, she can't stand just watching the news. She packs her bag, but when she's about to leave, Sylar walks in her room, surprising her. Sylar asks for her power. Claire responds by hitting his head with a trophy. I'll take that as a 'no'.

Claire tries to escape, but Sylar uses his powers to closes and block all the exits. The lights are blown out and phone is cut off. Claire grabs a knife while Sylar is heard calmly walking down the stairs. Claire sees Sylar then locks herself in a room clutching her knife.

We then shift to Maya's apartment where she readies a cricket bat. Dr. Mohindra walks in. The doc gets thwacked by Maya thinking it might be Sylar. Mohindra tells her his plan to pack up and leave to India. Her anger brings out her deadly power of death by proximity. Mohindra gets hurt and hypothesizes that powers may be activated by the fight or flight response triggered by the adrenal glands. He looks for further testing.

Back in Japan, Hiro watches the DVD of his father. His father tells Hiro that he is given a sacred duty to be a sentinel of his personal safe. His father says that the safe contains a secret that can destroy the world. He asks Hiro to never open the safe.

Hiro is unhappy with the role of being a guard and looks to be a hero. Hiro searches and finds a remote that uncovers the safe. His thumbprint then unlocks a door revealing an envelope with another DVD and a plastic encased piece of paper. Hiro and Ando watch the DVD. His father is on it, scolding his son for not following his dying instructions.

I think if Hiro's dad had really anticipated this, he would have made getting to the safe's content a little tougher.

Hiro's father says that the safe contains half of a formula. He says that the formula is a 'light to safeguard against the dark'. Hiro examine the paper and says that he should of paid better attention in chemistry.

There is a flash in the air and someone has taken the formula from Hiro's hand. He then stops time and follows a stream of movement to find a blonde, short haired lady in another room outside his office. She identifies herself as a speedster. She is curious about Hiro's power and ability to keep up with her. The lady then punches Hiro and takes off.

Peter goes back to the closet where his future self placed the gun. Matt walks in with the gun dangling from a pen. Peter transforms into his future self, then pulls Matt into his palm, causing him to disappear.

Back in the hospital, Nate is recovering form his wounds. Peter walks in the hospital and sees that his brother has gone missing. A news crew is outside the hospital reporting that Nathan has recovered. Nathan walks out and then into a church with the reporters following. He walks up to a praying family and says that he has seen God today who has given him another chance.

Peter walks into the church with his hand on his gun. Nathan announces to everybody that he was sent back to do great things. He tells the news crew that together they will be stewards of their own destiny. He says, "Save ourselves..save the world." Peter watching behind a pillar, uncocks his gun and helps his brother who then collapses.

Back in Dr. Mohindra's lab he discovers the genetic building blocks using a sample from Maya. He says within his syringe he can give powers to anyone.

Back at Claire's house, Sylar rattles the glass door that separate the two. I'm thinking, "The man can close doors from afar, but can't shatter glass?"

Anyways, Sylar takes the time to look though the files that Claire assembled to take to the press from last season. Claire sneaks up from behind and stabs Sylar in the chest. Sylar then recovers to push Claire against the wall using his newly regained telekinetic powers. He continues to slice though Claire's skull.

Later, Claire's wakes up with Sylar hovering over her head minus her hair and skull. Sylar continues to bleed while fondling Claire's brain. Sylar finds a part of her brain that he wants and proceeds to removes it. He pulls out the knife in his chest, exposes his wound which then immediately heals. Sylar gets Claire's skullcap off the floor and reattaches it to her head.

Sylar then starts to leave, but beforehand tells Claire that she is special. This is probably a reference to what Claire says in the alternate timeline shown in the beginning of the show. I guess we will find out what exactly Sylar means later.

Back to the show. Claire asks why Sylar does not kill her. He responds saying that he could not kill her even if he wanted to. He says that Claire will never die and figures that now after taking some of Claire's powers he is immortal as well.

Back at Mohindra's lab, the doctor and Maya debate the pros and cons of giving people super powers. Mohindra is excited at the prospect of people developing their own unique powers. Maya says that her powers are a curse. We leave this scene with Maya begging Mohindra to destroy the syringe capable of enhancing people.

Nathan wakes up at the hospital with Peter at his bedside. Peter shows Nathan that day's newspaper, showing his statements given to the press.

Nathan gets all religious saying that super humans can become angels and do God's bidding. Peter looks skeptical. Daniel Linderman walks in and Nathan acknowledges that he is responsible for his recovery.

In a New York hotel room Niki starts to get dressed and walks out to the room, greeting the state's Governor. It seems like that she survived the fire from last season. The two discuss recruiting Nathan to work for the administration.

We are then transported to find Matt in the middle of a desert with a scorpion on his face. Matt yells, but no one is around. I guess the future Peter is not homicidal.

Back in Japan, Hiro and Ando discuss the implications of having the formula fall into the wrong hands. Hiro decides to go to the future to see what will happen.

In future Japan, Hiro spots his future self and Ando talking above him. Future Ando demands future Hiro for the formula. Future Hiro declines then draws his sword. Ando then unleashes a red beam killing his friend then takes off with the half of the formula. Buildings start to collapse as a car tumbles towards Hiro. Hiro then shifts back to the present. Hiro sees present day Ando and decides not to tell him what he just saw.

We then jump to Mohindra, who is about to toss the syringe off a pier. Instead, he injects the liquid into himself and passes out.

At the hospital, Nathaniel is passed out with his mother hovering over him. Angela leaves the room and sees Peter. Having dreamed of Peter shooting Nathan, she asks him what he has done with her son. Angela realizes that the person who she is looking at is a future version of Peter. Peter says that he put her son someplace safe.

In the basement of the Company, we see Claire's dad, Noah Bennet, and a bald headed man claiming that he is Peter. It looks like future Peter can displace souls, something he probably did immediately after trying to assassinate his brother.

Back to Dr. Mohindra, we find him passed out then accosted by thugs. He wakes up and shows super strength by crushing a gun that was pulled on him. The thugs then run away. Mohindra looks up to see a mysterious painting of world splitting in half.

Episode Two Butterfly effect

Claire with her mom, cuts her hand on broken glass. She tells her mom that she does not feel any pain and that when she's hurt, it is the only time she knows she's still human. This probably alludes to what happens to her in the future... a loss of her humanity.

Peter's mom has a dream of walking in a room to find all the heroes killed, including Hiro, stabbed by his own sword, and Claire, decapitated. Sylar sneaks up behind her. She is then startled awake. Angela then goes to her son's apartment to find Peter with yarn strung across the room attached to maps. Angela says that his assassination attempt altered the timeline causing a "Butterfly Effect." For those who don't know what this means, rent the movie starring that 70's show dude.

In the morning, Maya walks into Mohinder's office to find him hanging upside down on a beam. Mohinder jumps down and tells Maya that the syringe substance made his senses more heightened and him more agile and stronger. With the fluid having the same effect of popping a months worth of Viagra, Mohinder decides to seduce Maya.

Commercial Break. Cool.. 'Quantum of Solace' Trailer.

At the company headquarters, Elle and Bob review a tape of Sylar taking out a pair of agents who were trying to apprehend him.

Back in Japan, Hiro has suspicions about his friend. Hiro and Ando discuss the recent robbery. Hiro's staff discover her name as Daphane and she lives in France. Hiro is reluctant to take Ando with him on this mission, but does anyway.

Niki, apparently working for the Governor, has a discussion about the appointment of Nathan for Junior Senator for the State of New York. Niki walks out to the garage parking lot and is confronted by a reporter with a photo of her internet stripper days. Niki blows him off and leaves.

Hiro and Ando arrive at Daphane pad in Paris. They take a look around and see the painting of Mona Lisa hanging on her wall.

We hop over to Claire who is recording a message questioning her humanity. A train speeds toward her and Peter swoops down and saves her. Peter asks her what she is doing and she says, "I just needed to feel something." I agree with Claire and think a train hitting your face outta do it.

Claire then tells Peter about incident with Sylar's and asks for his help in defeating him.

Niki visits Nathan at his hospital room. Nathan tries to reacquaint himself with her calling her Niki, but she seems puzzled and introduces herself as Tracy Strauss. Niki, now Tracy, offers Nathan the position in the New York senate. She tells him to think about it and gives him her card. She leaves walking right by Daniel Linderman without even seeing him.

Linderman says that it may be within God's plan to take Niki up on her offer. Nathan disagrees and asks him to get out.

Elle walks into her dad's office only to find him without a skullcap.

Elle goes down to the Noah's cell and gives him a gun telling him Sylar is in the building. She walks out and Sylar surprises her and tosses her aside. Noah shoots Sylar multiple times causing him to collapse with blood splattered behind him. Sylar recovers then launches him across the room with his mind.

Peter, in his new body, screams at Sylar through his cell glass for revenge. Sylar shows Elle his power that he just stole from her dad to turn metal into gold, converting the gun. Sylar then attempts to cut through Elle's head. She explodes in electricity before he succeeds, throwing him against a wall.

Peter, in his new body, escapes along with a slew of other cellmates.

Hiro, in Paris, determines that Daphane is a great thief with her speedy abilities. Hiro discloses that in the future, he witnessed Ando becoming a villain and killing him. Ando does not believe Hiro and tries to give another explanation, maybe that what killed him was a robot. Ando = Japanese for Android?... Probably Not..

Hiro tries to devise a plan to take something from Daphane to ransom and trade for the formula later. They spy a medal given to her in high school.

In the hospital, Peter shows Nathan his true scarred up, slick back future form. Peter explains that Nathan's announcement and unveiling created a bleak society where people with special powers are hunted, slaughtered and used. Nathan ponders the decision to take up the governor's offer.

Peter takes off saying he will set things right.

Nathan calls up Tracy and agrees to become the Junior Senator. Tracy taking the call in the parking garage is approached by the same reporter after she hangs up. The journalist shows a hidden video of the Niki making love to Nathan. Tracy tries to take away the portable video player grabbing the reporter's arm. Tracy displays a new power, a cold touch that freezes the reporter who then shatters and dies.

This probably explains how she survived the fire from last season.

Elle is shown in the dungeon of the Company. Angela Patrelli walks in and assumes command of the company. She relieves Elle of duty and tells her to beat it.

It grows dark in Paris as Daphane appears to find Hiro and Ando. Hiro holds her gold medal and asks to make a trade. She agrees and retrieves the formula that was behind the Mona Lisa the whole time. She says that her boss will not be happy.

Hiro gives the medal to Ando to make the trade. Daphane speeds up pulls up to Andos neck with a knife. Breaking the deal, she takes her medal back and leaves Ando with a small cut. Time resumes back to normal and Ando becomes weary of Hiro's suspicions. Hiro says that he placed a tracking device on the medal's ribbon and locates her in Berlin.

Dr. Mohindra wakes up with Maya next to him on his bed. He goes to the bathroom and finds that he is sensitive to light. He finds that his back is all messed up with skin peeling off.

Oh no! He should of used protection!!

Matt is wakes up in the desert with a turtle next to him. A voice tells him that a nearby plant will give him water. He uproots the plant and drinks from it. A man is found hovering over him and gives him pottery full of water. The man discloses to Matt that he is in Africa and that he can see the future. Matt asks the man if he was the one who painted the image of a split earth. The African then walks with Matt, following him.

Back in the hospital, Nathan plays a game of chess with Daniel Linderman. A nurse walks in and asks if he is playing by himself. Linderman says that no one can see him but Nathan.

Noah returns home and goes over files of the people who escaped the company's cells with Claire. He identifies them as villains capable of hurting a lot of people. He says that he has to go out to stop them. Claire's real mom shows up and is asked to watch over her.

Peter shows up in the company's basement looking for his past self. He tells his mom that he displaced the present Peter into a cellmate.

Meanwhile, the real Peter tries to call his brother on a payphone to warn him about a scarred up version of him. One of his fellow escapees comes up behind him and ends his phone call. Peter looks at his own reflection and sees someone else. He returns to his party and finds a member burning up some lady with blue flames. They load up into a newly obtained SUV. The group's leader, who turns out to be the same actor who played Marlo from The Wire, convinces Peter to get in the car.

Finally, in the Company's holding area, Sylar is strapped down and loopy. Angela Petrelli then reveals to him, calling him Gabriel, that she is his mother.
