Hotch goes to Tom Shaunessy's house late at night. His wife says her husband probably won't make it through the night and thanks him for coming. Hotch sits with Tom and he says he stopped his investigation of a serial killer after making a deal with the Devil. Tom hands Hotch a signed contract between Tom and the Devil. Tom says the deal is the reason the serial killer stopped. Hotch tells Tom it could have just been a coincidence. Tom tells Hotch that the contract is about to expire and he thinks the killer is going to start killing again.

Hotch goes back to his office and Garcia hands him a classified ad that Tom told him about. Garcia asks what it's about and Hotch says it is a message from the serial killer known as the Reaper. Meanwhile, Tom shakes as he pours himself a drink. He then falls on the floor and dies. Hotch gets the call from Tom's wife and learns of his death.

A couple is driving late at night and have to stop because the car has two flat tires. The man, Evan, starts to change one of the tires, then a truck pulls up behind him. A man gets out of the truck and offers to help. He then runs back to his truck, grabs a tire iron and bashes Evan in the head. The man then pulls a gun and points it at the woman, Nina. He then tells her he isn't going to shoot her. She thanks him and he pulls out a knife and slits her throat. The killer goes back to Evan, tells him Nina is dead, then shoots Evan in the head. He then pulls out a pair of glasses and places them on the victim.

JJ goes to Hotch with a file about unusual Boston area homicides. He opens the file, then tells the team they are going to Boston. One the plane, Hotch tells the team about the Reaper. Hotch says he made a deal with the police to stop killing. They figure he contacted the police because he wanted them to know his power. They look over the multiple murders and wonder how Hotch was able to profile the Reaper since the killings were so different. Hotch instructs his team to put out a story that there is a copycat of the Reaper, which he thinks will draw out the real one.

The team arrives at the Boston police and are reluctantly invited in when Hotch shows Tom's letter. The team then investigate the scene of Nina and Evan's murders. Hotch sees that Evan is wearing glasses, but he doesn't need them. He says the Reaper likes to take items from his victims and place them on their throats so the police know it's him. They find out that the glasses belonged to the Reaper's latest victim, who turned out to be the only known survivor from the Reaper's attacks. They were able to get a sketch of the Reaper based on the survivor's description. Spencer looks over Tom's letter and sees that the Reaper signed it with a symbol known as The Eye of Providence, which is used by the government. He says the Reaper sees himself as the personification of fate. They then listen to a 911 call where the Reaper reported two murders he finished. They find out that when EMS arrived at the scene, they found the survivor barely breathing.

Hotch talks to a reporter named Roy about the copycat killings. Roy tells Hotch that he thinks the killings are the real deal. Hotch tells Roy that as soon as he has something to say, he will contact him.

An officer pulls over an elderly couple who are driving at night. The officer approaches the car and takes the man's license. He comes back to the car and issues the man a warning for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. He then proceeds to stab and shoot the victims to death. The team arrive at the scene. Hotch sees the license out of the wallet and figures the Reaper used a cop ruse. Hotch sees the contents of the woman's purse scattered and thinks the Reaper went through her purse. Hotch then finds a picture in the glove box with the word Fate written in blood along with a question mark. David sees that the question mark is new and Hotch says it is a message to them. Hotch says that the Reaper is pinning his latest killings on them. Hotch tells David that he stopped profiling the Reaper and the killings stopped.

Hotch returns to the station and tells the team that the Reaper is a predator, often referred to as an omnivore. He says the Reaper is hungry for power and is extremely disciplined. Hotch says the killer probably has no social contacts. David points out that the Reaper spends a lot of time with his younger female victims. He says the Reaper may be a hebophile and uses his knife as a substitute for sexual penetration. Hotch explains that a hebophile is an adult who preys on teenagers. Hotch suggests they look into anyone who has access to children like a coach, teacher, or principal who may have a record of sex crimes against teenage girls.
