David reads a passage from his book to an audience. He then signs books and talks to his fans. As David leaves, he is approached by a woman who asks if he is investigating the recent uptick of murders in Cleveland. She says she thinks there is a serial killer at work. She says she tried to report it to the police, but they ignored her. She reads off the cases she thinks are linked. David tells her there seems no obvious link between the cases. He hands her a card and tells her to call him for career advice or if she gets a call from the police about the crimes.

The woman drives to a closed murder scene. She gets out of her car and tries to find a way in. A man sees her in the back and tells her that he lives in the neighborhood. She makes him give her his address. He convinces her that he means her no harm. He says he saw her snooping around. She asks about what happened. He says he can't believe the murder happened on his street. She tells him that a lot of murders have happened. He asks if she is with the police. He then quietly locks the back gate.

David gets a call from the police to investigate the girl's murder. They tell David his card was found on the victim. David tells the police that he talked to her last night, but never asked her name. David learns her name was Zoe. David sees that Zoe had pepper spray, but never used it. David also learns she was asphyxiated. The officer tells David that the owner of the house was also murdered.

JJ shows Garcia and Derek pictures of her child. David calls and tells Garcia to look for a connection between the recent crimes in Cincinnati. David tells the officer that Zoe had a notebook with her and asks if he can look in her car for it. The officer tells David to go ahead. The officer and David then go to Zoe's parent's house. They break the news to Zoe's mother that Zoe was murdered. They tell her that Zoe may have been visiting a crime scene. Zoe's mom says she told Zoe to stop going to crime scenes. David asks to see Zoe's room. She tells David that he was a hero to Zoe. The officer takes Zoe's mom to see Zoe's body while David looks around the room. David sees her computer.

The team finds that the only connection between the crimes is that they happened within a seven mile radius. David asks the team to look at Zoe's computer files. The team looks at the victims Zoe believed were killed by a serial killer. They see that everything was different between the cases. Emily sees the crimes escalated in violence. Spencer suggests the killer gets excited by the killings. Derek notices that the victims who were killed without a gun were indecisive. The team then realizes that the crimes are all copycats of previous serial killings.

The team meets with David at the Cincinnati police headquarters. The team thinks the unsub is a young man who hasn't found his identity yet. They think he could be a student and are looking at college enrollments. Meanwhile, the killer buys duct tape, a knife, and some wire.

JJ tells Hotch they have three male suspects in criminology courses, but they are in jail or oversees. Hotch tells her to look at online enrollees. David tells Hotch he doesn't want to be part of the profile because he needs to clear his head. Hotch tells the rest of the team to take over the profile.

The team tells the force they should look for a young, male, antisocial, native to Cleveland who lives alone. The killer will probably have a lot of images and information on murders on his computer.

David tells Hotch that he thinks Zoe was a victim of opportunity. David feels responsible for Zoe's death because he encouraged her to not stop until she found what she was looking for. David says he was the last person she talked to before she was murdered which makes it very personal for him. Hotch says they can utilize the media since the killer is probably looking to see if the police has made the connection.
