A black metal band performs in Norway. The Norwegian police go to investigate a skeleton the band is using as a prop, believing it is actually human remains. They determine that the bones are American, so they decide to give them back to the states.

The team examines the remains. Camille learns that the Norwegian band stole the remains from an American band a few weeks ago. They see that the ribs are splayed open. Bones explains that it is an ancient ritual where a person is cut open from the back and the ribs are splayed open. Bones suggests that the remains may have been stolen from a grave.

Booth meets with Gordon to discuss the case. Gordon tells Booth that he is going to meet with Sweets to give an interview for Sweets's book. Gordon meets with Sweets and the two discuss Gordon's work on female serial killers. Gordon then tells Sweets that Booth and Bones are not opposites. The two discuss the sexual component to Booth and Bones's relationship. Gordon disagrees with Sweets's observations, but offers little advice.

Angela gives Camille a computer rendering of what the victim may have looked like. Camille says the tox reports came back negative for embalming fluid, so they believe the victim was murdered. Camille and Hodgins see Angela listening to the metal band and see she is enjoying the music. Angela shows the two detectives an image of the victim. She says she was able to use facial detection to figure out the man was named Mayhem and played in a death metal band named Spew.

Sweets tells Booth and Bones that Gordon refused to write the introduction to his book. Bones suggests that Gordon just doesn't like his book, but Sweets says Gordon told him he was retiring. Booth then gets a call to find the metal band Spew. The three then discuss the difference between death metal and black metal. Sweets confesses that he was really into metal as a teenager.

Bones goes to Hodgins and Camille and tells them that they can't find the band. Hodgins says he was able to find the location that the body was taken from by analyzing the mud on the boots that were on the skeleton. He says Spew is an underground band and he suggests that they go to a slaughterhouse to try to find them. Bones and Camille then look at the remains. Clark points out a missing toe and says that the boots belonged to the victim while he was still alive.

Bones and Booth take Gordon along to investigate the band. Bones admits that they are trying to talk him out of retiring. Gordon tells the detectives that he used to be in a glam rock band. Booth remembers the band and says he used to be a fan. The three then find Spew practicing in the slaughterhouse. Booth shows his badge, but the band refuses to stop. Booth then shoots out the amplifier and the music stops.

Bones calls Booth and asks if he is going to be there for the interrogation. Booth says he has to do paperwork since he fired his weapon and tells Bones she and Sweets will have to do the interrogation by themselves. Sweets and Bones question the band and ask what Mayhem's real name is. The band refuses to answer, but eventually admit Mayhem's real name was Justin. They all claim that they killed him, but Sweets sees they are lying. They then say they last saw Mayhem a year ago. Sweets goes to Booth and tells him that Grinder is different from the other band mates since he seemed to have a personal connection to Mayhem.

Clark shows Camille gouge marks in the bones and says that it looks like the victim was shot in the rear, then the bullet was dug out with a knife.

Gordon and Sweets meet with Grinder. He asks where the other band members are. Sweets asks if he replaced Mayhem in the band. Grinder says he killed him for the job. Sweets tells Grinder that Mayhem's remains were used as a prop. Gordon then pulls out a boyhood picture of Grinder and Mayhem. Gordon says they want to help him find out what happened to his childhood friend. Sweets asks who had the remains before the Norwegians. Grinder admits that a rival band named Zorch had the remains.
