A team of Penn State and Virginia Commonwealth University researchers found a way to use aluminum clusters and water to create hydrogen gas that can be used to produce energy. This new method is unique because of the use of the aluminum structure to create the gas. 'Our method allows us to produce hydrogen without supplying heat, connecting to a battery, or adding electricity,' said Siv Khanna, one of the researchers. 'Once the aluminum clusters are synthesized, they can generate hydrogen on demand without the need to store it.'
Because the team has not yet found a way to reuse the aluminum cluster, an unlimited source of energy is not yet available. The team later hopes that they find a way to remove the hydroxyl waste from the aluminum structures to reuse them again.
